On Saturday night my partner and I attended our close friend Sally's 21st birthday party.
With the usual suspects, the usual custom of fancy dress, and the usual Elliott family ritual of Scottish dancing, it came as a shock to find out the evening's food was not so usual, in fact, it was somewhat unsual.
As per her daily diet for last 10 or so years, Sally supplied her guests with all Vegetarian, no cheat, meals, from appetisers through to dessert.
Here's a little taste of her menu:
- Risotto Balls
- Spring rolls
- Pasties
- Jasmine rice
- Red Velvet Cup Cakes with Cream Cheese Icing
Despite being a self-proclaimed avid meat-eater, these menu items did not let me down, nor was I drooling over the dog at the end of the night. The chilli and curry were warming to the stomach on a drizzly winter evening, and though filling, had just enough spice in them to keep me 'bopping' (as my mum would say).
I once had my doubts that Vegetarians could maintain all the nutrient types and levels required for a healthy diet and lifestyle. However, after working in an organic produce store over my senior years of High School, I learnt that it is possible, and that Vegos by choice should be congratulated on their willpower and environmental advocation. A quick scan of the Vegetarian Resources Group website (available here), added one interesting fact to the pro-vego argument...
Did you know that Leonardo Da Vinci, Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, and Paul McCartney were all advocates of vegetarianism? With such fame and huge successes, could it be that perhaps... they were onto something??
Scrap Bacon & Eggs for breakfast, I'm having Porridge instead.
