Masterchef fanatics, this one's for you.
When contestant Mat Beyer smuggled a smart phone into the competition, the media was on top of the story like a stack of sticky pancakes. Despite his empathy-seeking reasons, Mat was instantly eliminated by judge Matt Preston, as we saw recently on the show. This scandal along with the shows progression from recipe cards to digital recipes for competing contestants, has conjured an epiphonous moment for me, as I sit here wondering what impact technology, in particular 'smart phones' are having upon the culinary industry.
From direct internet searches, to pre-downloaded recipe and shopping list applications, all available in one location, digital touch screen devices have become accepted cooking utensils because of their ability to improve efficiency in the kitchen. Busy parents can now avoid the tactical treasure hunt that is finding a recipe, and sail smoothly and paper-cut-free through to feeling full.
The main identifiable downfall in this digital revolution, however, is damage to devices. Therefore, I propose, and you heard it here first, a basic product by the Glad brand perhaps, that acts as a sticker you can place over your LCD screen, to eliminate food damage. Another quirky knick knack that incoporates cooking and new age technology is the heat-powdered phone charger, viewable here.
For real foodies however, cookbooks will always provoke nostalgia, and can only ever be complimented by technology.
